Where do Hamburg people go when they want to eat good food and hear great Jazz?
You don’t know? The answer is: they take a plane to Paris or New York, or they take the ICE to Berlin.
This frustrating situation has bothered us for years.
It’s really weird in a place like Hamburg, where the Beatles started their career and where Al Jarreau had his first success, that you cannot find any jazz club that can keep up with the international competition.
The few places you can find are too small, have poor quality sound and a stage that is hard to see. Moreover, none offers fine dining.
We -- like many others-- have waited years for a change, but nothing happened. And so we decided to take the initiative. Our motto: “nothing will happen until you do it yourself”. So, we decided to create a place of our own, the Jazz Café*, in the middle of the Speicherstadt district. (*Tentative name )
Jazz Café | Speicherstadt
The Jazz Club’s quarters are located in Hamburg’s hottest new neighborhood, the “Speicherstadt”.
Those buildings are classified as historical monuments and will soon be listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
In recent years, the remarkable architecture of Hamburg’s docklands (most of it build during the 19th Century) has been a magnet for the city’s sleekest new business headquarters, successful artists, creative agencies, chic shops, and gallery spaces. In their wake have followed a great variety of new cultural attractions* for city visitors. And even Hamburg’s new philharmonic concert hall (Elbphilharmonie) will be built in the neighborhood of The Jazz Café.
This area has a magic drawn both from Hamburg’s pirate legacy and wanderlust.
The new “Hafen-City” is growing – more companies and more flats are rising.
*Shipping museum, coffee museum, mini train wonderland, dungeon, custom duty museum, spice museum and many others…
The interior is a rare stroke of luck…
The Jazz Café will be located in one of Hamburg’s most impressive warehouses (Block V - build in 1907), on the ground floor. High ceilings, and the original pillars of the old workshop will be preserved.
The big hall is approximately 140 square meters and the ceiling is more than 5 meters high. 7 windows-- each about 8 square meters—flood the room with light during the day, and its capacity is approximately 150 persons. A bar will occupy the center of the hall near the entrance. It will have an excellent view of the stage. And during concerts the sound engineer will be placed behind the bar. The mixing desk will be built into the bar and concealed when concerts are not being performed. A second, smaller and separate of some 50 square meters, and a capacity of approximately 40 persons, will also be available. Its 4 tall windows look out over a waterway facing the adjoining block of brick warehouse buildings. The interior design of the club will be timeless, elegant, and tasteful. Colors and furniture will be chosen in harmony with the building itself. The concert space will be acoustically optimized - offering the best sound in town!
The location of the club is on the route of daily tour boats (Barkassen). Upon opening, the Jazz Café will be counted tops among the attractions of this outstanding area.
